Psychedelic

The artist named Antoni Gaudi who is very well known for his outstanding and flamboyant architecture  really seemed to link back again to this hippy movement in the 60's. His work displays aspects of modernism aswell as a really psychedelic feel.

Psychedelic

It was this artist (Alphonse Mucha) aswell as other artists involved in the Art Nouveau movement that triggered off my urge to compare between art, music and trends for the current project. As soon as I saw Mucha's work I thought of the Hippie Youth movement which came about in the 1960-1970's. This Hippie subcultural movement developed in the United States in the 1960's and spread around the world from then on. It consisted of people being harmonious with nature, people living communally  people taking part in artistic experimentation (mainly in music) and the use of recreational drugs. Most likely because of these recreational drugs this era resembled psychedelic colours, flowing patterns and tie dye material. 

It then becomes clear that the people who developed this Youth Hippie Movement were clearly inspired by the floral, flowing paintings created by Alphonse Mucha and other artists involved in the Art Nouveau art movement of 1890-1910. Maybe they even saw all of his beautiful paintings and conjured up this idea of world peace, happiness, floral decorations and harmonious music. After realising this trend and link between Art Nouveau and the hippy society I also found similar links in art but in the form of architecture.

Art Nouveau

Beginning with the art movement 'Art Nouveau' it becomes clear that trends have even been set as far back as the 1890's. The movement Art Nouveau seemed to be at its peak between 1890-1910 and came back around in the 1960's. It was most popular around Europe and was very big in Paris and London. Art Nouveau became not only an artform but aspects of furniture, jewellery and other household objects aswell as being involved in architecture. Some of the first artists to kick start this art movement were people like Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret Macdonald. Together they were two of the most influential members of the loose collective at the Glasgow School of Art. Aswell as the pair an artist named Alphonse Mucha seem to stand out for me in the world of Art Nouveau. Mucha was the very first commercial illustrator creating very large paintings aswell as posters for advertising purposes. His paintings generally consisted of floral patternings, flowing lines and edges, portraits of beautiful woman and very subtle, pastel colours.

I collected this information from the past 50 years and presented it in the form of mind maps aswell as creating moodboards on Pinterest including imagery of the music and artists around at that particular time.

When discovering and exploring the many different art movements that have come about over the past fifty years, I began to notice lots of links and patterns in the art movements themselves to music, genres and even links with fashion. It seems that over the years these art movements have become the most influential products for the majority of trends that have been discovered and then rediscovered over time.
